The most common failure is electrolytic capacitor degradation. These units are 25–35 years old and the original capacitors weren't built to last forever. Over time they leak and the corrosive fluid eats through the PCB and nearby components. Symptoms include a blank or dim display, red horizontal lines on the display, unresponsive buttons, or intermittent operation. We replace all electrolytics capacitors as standard and inspect for any other faults at the same time.

Most units require a VFD or LCD (display) replacement in addition to a capacitor recap — in my experience, around 9 in 10 repairs involve both. I’ll assess your unit on arrival and let you know. We confirm before we start work.

When you buy a refurbished unit you can save $150 by returning your old unit to us. This helps us keep donor units in circulation. You can send it before or after receiving your replacement — we’re flexible. Sending it afterwards means you can re-use the packaging I use to ship out your refurbished unit. Overseas buyers are welcome to take up the offer if the shipping economics make sense.
